Gardens Without Borders © 2024–25

A Nutkhut Initiative for Public Open Spaces

Gardens Without Borders is Nutkhut’s new creative ecology project—transforming public green spaces into living, community-led environments shaped by heritage, storytelling, and biodiversity.

Launched in partnership with the London Borough of Richmond as part of the Cultural Reforesting programme, the first garden at Hounslow Heath brings local people together to grow plants, share memories, and celebrate cultural connections to nature.

What’s It About?

Community-led Design: Residents, schools, faith and cultural groups co-create the space through workshops and consultation.

Cultural Planting: The garden will feature native and culturally significant plants reflecting the community’s rich heritage.

Public Art: A commissioned sculpture will serve as a storytelling centrepiece.

Wellbeing & Learning: A space for shared learning, nature-based workshops, and intergenerational exchange.

Why It Matters

In times of ecological and social change, this project offers:

• A space to connect across cultures and generations

• A living archive of stories and plants from around the world

• A local response to global questions about belonging and sustainability
